Get To Know James Hipkin

James is an accomplished, forward-thinking marketing professional with 25+ years of multi-disciplinary experience in marketing and marketing communications companies serving high-profile, global brands and B2C clients in consumer packaged goods, durables, transportation, telecommunications and financial services. He has been involved in digital for more than ten years, first as President of a direct marketing agency in San Francisco, where he led the evolution of the agency from traditional direct marketing to digital. Clients included Apple and Wells Fargo online bank. And then as the head of a mid sized agency’s interactive group, with Toyota as the main client. He joined Red8 Interactive, a long term vendor, as an owner and managing director, 5.5 years ago.

Speaker Q&A With James

What inspired you to give this talk at WordCamp?

Two things: the WordPress community has give a lot to our efforts and we look for ways to give something back, and we see designers and design agencies struggling to manage website development projects, so we are sharing our experiences as the construction crew to help them be successful.

How did you discover WordPress?

Many years ago I had a blog, Hipkin’s HipShots, that I used to share some of the things I’d learned over along career in marketing and advertising.

How has WordPress Or WordCamp impacted you?

Learned lots and met great people.

How do you primarily work with WordPress?

It’s my full time job. My company builds custom websites using WordPress for the CMS.

What does the WordCamp theme Discovery mean to you?

Innovation and discovery have always been part of my life and career. A key asset of WordPress is its eco system. Many, many smart people solving problems and sharing what they’ve discovered.

What is the latest book you read?

The Lean Startup by Eric Ries.

What is your favorite restaurant? Favorite menu item?

Chez Hipkin and pretty much anything I cook 🙂

What TV series are you current binging on/into?

Marco Polo.

What do you do for fun?

I like being outdoors gardening and working on our property. When I’m not outside I have a passion for cooking.
