What inspired you to give this talk at WordCamp?

I want to have a conversation about how WordPress can be used to empower people in large organizations to share data with each other and the world. This is a topic I’m very passionate about, and WordCamp is a venue where lots of people from different organizations will gather.

How did you discover WordPress?

I first installed WordPress in 2005, when I was looking for alternatives to Moveable Type. It wasn’t useful for me at the time, but a year or so later, a friend needed help with her WordPress site. I peeked at the datamodel and how templates worked, and haven’t left since.

How has WordPress Or WordCamp impacted you?

The first WordCamp I went to, I spent 45 minutes at the Happiness Bar with Alex King figuring out how to syndicate posts across sites in WordPress MU. I was amazed by his kindness and patience, and very grateful for that introduction to the larger WordPress community.

I believe that Open Source Software and the communities around each project are a vital resource to humanity’s ability to explore and create – and what we have here with WordPress is truly exemplary and welcoming.

How do you primarily work with WordPress?

I use WordPress as “just enough technology” to help people and organizations improve their communications and business process. This entails developing themes and plugins; training designers, engineers, publishers and managers ; and fostering community so people are more likely to share ideas and success.

What does the WordCamp theme Discovery mean to you?

Discovery is about of identifying the landscape which surrounds the goal. It’s about making connections with people, and finding new ideas or approaches.

What is the latest book you read?

Ron Chernow’s Hamilton.

What is your favorite restaurant? Favorite menu item?

I’m a big fan of noodles of all kinds.

What TV series are you current binging on/into?

Steven Universe.

What do you do for fun?

I organize and participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) events for kids and adults. I like to see people in the act of discovering things.
